Apple Wallet is getting ready to bring its digital driver’s license capability to three more US states: North Carolina, Kentucky, and Utah. This upcoming rollout will push the service closer to reaching 20 participating states and territories, expanding digital identification access for more iPhone users.
Utah, Kentucky and North Carolina Are Next
Reports indicate that Utah, Kentucky, and North Carolina are the leading contenders for this upcoming rollout. Utah’s prospective launch follows backend references to driver’s license support discovered within Apple’s systems earlier this year. While these clues point to ongoing technical work, neither Apple nor state officials have shared an official launch date.
Kentucky is similarly getting ready for the integration. The state previously stated its intention to incorporate Apple Wallet once its digital ID platform upgrades were finished. With those improvements anticipated to wrap up by the summer of 2026, hopes are high that the feature will debut soon.
Meanwhile, North Carolina has shared a more specific schedule. The state recently outlined its framework for a digital driver’s license system and verified that Apple Wallet compatibility is anticipated by early 2027. Initially, locals will use the official NC Wallet app to access their digital credentials.
Digital IDs Continue to Expand Across the US
Apple first rolled out support for state IDs and digital driver’s licenses within Wallet back in 2021. Even though adoption started off at a measured pace with states adopting the system gradually, this upcoming growth builds on recent rollouts in Oklahoma and Virginia. At present, 16 US states along with Puerto Rico allow digital IDs via Apple Wallet.
These upcoming integrations stand to push the total to 19 states, expanding the reach of the feature nationwide.

Physical Licenses Still Remain Important
Residents in supported states have the option to store their driver’s licenses on Apple Wallet on compatible iPhones and Apple Watches. These digital IDs can then be used at participating businesses, select TSA security checkpoints, and other compatible venues.
Even so, digital IDs in Apple Wallet are not universally accepted and cannot fully substitute for a physical driver’s license. Individuals should keep their physical identification handy when driving, taking trips, or visiting locations that lack support for digital credentials.
While this growth highlights the rising momentum behind digital IDs, the precise timeline depends on cooperation between state governments and Apple. Neither Utah nor Kentucky has provided finalized release dates.
