Binance is currently looking into a suspected security breach following the departure of roughly USD 5.57 billion from exchange-connected wallets over three distinct blockchains. These reported transactions affect Ethereum, Bitcoin, and Tron, prompting serious worries about a significant crypto security event. In response, Tether and Circle moved to freeze roughly USD 1.8 billion worth of stablecoins connected to the primary recipient wallet.
According to on-chain estimates, the total includes USD 3.51 billion on Ethereum, USD 1.44 billion in Bitcoin, and USD 630 million on Tron. Because Binance has yet to verify a hack or confirm any loss of user funds, the exact nature of these movements remains uncertain. The exchange stated that it is monitoring a “potential security issue” and has initiated a prompt investigation.
Tether and Circle Freeze USD 1.8 Billion
Issuers of stablecoin assets acted swiftly once investigators pinpointed the destination wallet. Tether locked down about 975.1 million USDT, whereas Circle blocked roughly 823 million USDC. Together, their swift interventions locked out access to about USD 1.8 billion associated with the suspected event.
Jeremy Allaire, CEO of Circle, verified the measure via a public post on X, noting, “In coordination with law enforcement, we have frozen more than 800M USDC associated with the incident.” Both organizations possess the capability to bar designated wallet addresses from moving their respective stablecoins.
Unusual Wallet Activity Raises Security Questions
The initial movement on Ethereum involved 167,464 ETH alongside numerous token transfers directed to a freshly generated address. Furthermore, analysts spotted an earlier wallet delegation that utilized Ethereum’s EIP-7702 standard, a mechanism enabling standard wallets to run delegated smart contract logic.
Nevertheless, the specific technique used to secure the necessary wallet permissions is still unknown. Binance has not stated whether malicious actors breached its hot wallets or took advantage of a different vulnerability.
Crypto Market Watches Binance Investigation
This suspected Binance crypto withdrawal happened alongside broader downward pressure throughout the major digital asset markets. Bitcoin dipped beneath USD 79,000, and BNB fell by about 7% down to approximately USD 699, whereas Monero climbed nearly 6% as market participants reacted to the heightened security alerts.
Should investigators ultimately verify the reported USD 5.57 billion theft, the event would eclipse past crypto exchange exploits. At this stage, the on-chain total reflects estimated wallet outflows rather than verified customer losses.
