Satellite Internet Is Coming: India’s satellite broadband landscape is heating up as major contenders like Starlink, Jio, and OneWeb gear up for the market. But who stands out, and what do consumers need to know ahead of time?
Starlink: Elon Musk’s Starlink has established one of the globe’s largest LEO satellite networks and secured India’s GMPCS authorisation. Nonetheless, commercial rollout in the country still hinges on spectrum allocation and final regulatory approvals.
Jio: Reliance Jio is formulating its satellite connectivity approach through strategic partnerships while simultaneously working toward a potential homegrown LEO constellation. Reports point to plans for an expansive satellite network that could position Jio in direct competition with global players.

OneWeb: The Bharti-backed Eutelsat OneWeb entered India’s satellite broadband sector early on. It has already secured essential authorisations and teamed up with Nelco to investigate LEO connectivity throughout the country.

Who Has the Satellite Advantage: Starlink boasts massive constellation scale, whereas OneWeb functions from a higher orbit with a more modest constellation. Jio’s competitive edge may shift significantly as it advances its domestic satellite goals and scales up ground infrastructure.

What About Speed: Satellite internet is capable of delivering broadband access without total dependence on traditional fiber-optic cables or mobile towers. Actual speeds and latency will vary based on satellite technology, network traffic, user terminals, and physical location.

Rural India Could Be the Big Winner: Isolated and underserved regions stand to gain the most from satellite broadband. The technology offers a viable path to reach areas where laying fiber or constructing extensive terrestrial networks remains challenging.

Pricing Could Decide the Race: Technology alone will not dictate the victor of India’s satellite internet sector. Hardware expenses, monthly subscription packages, data policies, and setup requirements will likely prove critical as users weigh their options.

Regulation Still Matters: All three providers must still navigate India’s regulatory and spectrum framework before their commercial operations can scale completely. Acquiring licences alone does not guarantee immediate consumer access to satellite broadband.
