Companies utilizing WhatsApp for service updates, order notifications, and customer inquiries are subject to a revised pricing structure beginning October 1. Meta has initiated fees for specific message categories that were previously provided at no cost on the WhatsApp Business Platform.
Alongside these rate adjustments comes a mandatory billing requirement. Organizations that connect via direct WhatsApp Business Platform integrations or partner with Solution Providers are required to maintain a valid payment method on their account. Accounts failing to meet the September 30 deadline risk having their service messages suspended as of October 1.
Which WhatsApp Users are Affected?
These modifications do not impact individual WhatsApp users or businesses relying exclusively on the standard WhatsApp Business application. Instead, the updates apply specifically to organizations utilizing the WhatsApp Business Platform, which integrates WhatsApp software with customer-support tools, CRM platforms, chatbots, and other corporate systems.
Industry experts indicate that news regarding the updated fees might cause misunderstandings among general consumers. Nevertheless, standard WhatsApp usage, personal calls, and private chats continue to be entirely unaffected.
Meta is actively modifying the billing model for utility and service messages. Service messages consist of non-template responses sent by enterprises following a customer-initiated chat. Beginning October 1, Meta applies charges to delivered service messages that exceed a designated monthly complimentary allowance.
What Changes from October 1?
Within India, organizations are granted the initial 1,000 service replies each month free of charge per business phone number. Any additional service messages sent beyond this threshold incur fees based on local pricing.
Utility messages are likewise impacted. These communications include communications like delivery updates and order confirmations. Previously, companies could dispatch these notifications free of charge during the standard 24-hour customer-service window. Starting October 1, qualifying utility messages sent inside that window are now subject to billing.
In India, the standard rate for utility messages is reported at Rs. 0.115 per delivered message prior to GST. Factoring in an 18% GST, the total cost reaches approximately Rs. 0.136 per message. Pricing varies for authentication, marketing, and alternative message categories, prompting organizations to review their account-level rates prior to calculating monthly expenses.
