Official plans for a Nintendo Switch port of GTA 5 do not exist, but an unofficial version developed by fans has been officially canceled. While not an official release, the cancellation has disappointed millions of Nintendo Switch users. Following the release of GTA: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition on Switch, GTA 5 had the potential to become one of the rare GTA titles available on the handheld platform. Ultimately, however, legal intervention from Take-Two Interactive put an end to the effort.
In early September, a fan-made project spearheaded by lead modder Mojso generated significant excitement among Switch owners regarding an unofficial Nintendo Switch port of GTA 5. The modder also shared intentions to develop similar ports for iOS and Android devices. When players later inquired about the progress of the port, Mojso revealed that development had been halted due to legal action taken by Take-Two Interactive.
Trouble started in mid-September when the modding team’s official Discord account was banned for violating platform rules. Mojso subsequently announced the project’s closure on September 28, and the entire team dispersed on October 3. The group also faced accusations of using leaked source code for the game, which created further complications.
While the precise motivation behind the shutdown remains unconfirmed, the Switch port of GTA 5 has met the same destiny as many other fan-led GTA projects over the years. Furthermore, the developers have not issued any official statement regarding plans to bring the 2013 GTA installment to the Switch or Switch 2 consoles.

Technical Constraints Prevent an Official Release?
Running GTA 5 on the Nintendo Switch was always going to be a difficult endeavor due to the game’s massive scale, high demands, and the hardware limitations of the console. Nevertheless, the fan project demonstrated a strong desire among players for GTA titles on Switch hardware, though Rockstar Games has remained silent on the matter, potentially due to these technical hurdles.
Although the cancellation of the fan project is undoubtedly disappointing, players should keep in mind that an unofficial port would not have delivered the same experience as the authentic game. An unofficial version would lack Rockstar-supported features such as cloud saves, achievements, and GTA Online progress—perks that only an official release could provide.
