Mac owners looking to reclaim precious storage space from Apple Intelligence now have an open-source solution to purge its on-device AI models. Dubbed RemoveMacAI, this command-line utility can deactivate Apple Intelligence functions, erase the downloaded files, and block macOS from fetching them again automatically. This tool emerged after Apple eliminated the master toggle for turning off Apple Intelligence in macOS 27, replacing it with fragmented settings scattered across various AI capabilities.
According to the developer of RemoveMacAI, Apple’s AI models typically consume roughly 12GB of space, though the footprint can swell significantly depending on the machine. Documentation indicates that Apple Intelligence has been observed occupying upwards of 35GB on a single MacBook Air, underscoring the heavy storage burden these models can place on certain computers.
RemoveMacAI Turns Off Apple Intelligence Features
The utility addresses multiple facets of Apple Intelligence simultaneously. It is capable of turning off Siri’s AI capabilities, Writing Tools, Genmoji, Image Playground, ChatGPT integration, and automated AI summaries across applications like Mail, Messages, Safari, and Notes.
Additionally, it deletes the data files powering functions such as Photos Clean Up, Spatial Photos, and predictive code completion in Xcode. Hosted as open-source software on GitHub, the project provides a feature that lets users inspect the exact storage footprint of individual AI models prior to deletion.
Why Mac Users Want the Storage Back
Because Apple Intelligence depends heavily on local processing, supported Macs are required to store those files directly on the machine. Although individuals can disable specific functions individually, macOS 27 lacks a native, one-step method to completely purge the underlying model files.
This limitation proves especially annoying for people operating Macs with limited SSD capacity. Reclaiming even 12GB offers substantial relief on systems equipped with 256GB of storage, particularly given that some individuals have experienced much larger space allocations taken up by Apple Intelligence.

The Changes Can be Reversed
Modifications made by RemoveMacAI are not irreversible. The software features a built-in revert command that strips away the utility’s configurations and permits macOS to pull the AI models down once more. Meanwhile, system dictation remains fully functional because its speech recognition models operate independently of Apple Intelligence.
Nevertheless, users must note that eradicating the models means forfeiting the Apple Intelligence capabilities tied to them. The utility is designed specifically for Mac users who prioritize recovering disk space over maintaining unwanted AI tools.
