Apple is preparing to introduce stricter privacy controls for Mac users, targeting how artificial intelligence agents and third-party apps access sensitive data stored locally.
According to the company, users wishing to grant an application “Full Disk Access” will be required to perform a “very explicit user action” to authorize the permission. This specific setting yields entry to system files, emails, messages, and browsing histories.
Apple Warns About Growing AI Risks
Apple stated that this update is essential as AI agents grow increasingly autonomous and capable. Because these software tools execute tasks on behalf of users, they frequently request access to various files and programs.
Although Apple refrained from naming particular developers or software, it noted that certain creators have utilized Full Disk Access “in ways that could put users at risk” while operating outside the “full knowledge and understanding” of the user.
The tech giant also highlighted a broader privacy implication: granting an application access to a user’s messages can inadvertently expose private information belonging to other individuals who communicate with that user.
Furthermore, Apple emphasized that the hazards linked to this degree of access will “grow substantially” alongside the evolution of autonomous AI agents.
AI Agents Increasingly Seek Broad Access
The footprint of AI agents across computers and personal devices has widened rapidly. OpenAI reported earlier this week that its agent offerings, ChatGPT Work and Codex, have reached over 35 million users, marking a significant rise from 10 million in July.
Additionally, Meta’s Muse climbed to the top of app store download charts following its launch last month.
To successfully execute tasks on behalf of the user, these services often demand sweeping access to personal files and applications.

ChatGPT Mac Feature Also Uses Full Disk Access
OpenAI rolled out an optional feature for its Mac desktop application back in August, designed to read, summarize, compose, and transmit text messages for the user.
To retrieve conversation data directly from Apple’s Messages app, this specific feature relies on users enabling Full Disk Access for ChatGPT.
These upcoming controls from Apple arrive amid tighter integration between desktop software and AI agents, heightening the need for users to understand the privacy consequences of the permissions they grant.
Apple indicated that its primary objective is making sure users fully comprehend the associated risks prior to granting access, empowering them to make educated choices regarding their personal data.
