Google parent Alphabet experienced a historic stock-market setback following financial results that sparked worries regarding advertising revenue growth and escalating artificial intelligence expenses. Shares dropped steeply on Thursday, October 29, erasing more than USD 500 billion in market capitalization as shareholders doubted whether artificial intelligence investments would yield returns in a timely manner.
This market sell-off arrived in the wake of Alphabet’s third-quarter earnings report, published on October 28. Despite an increase in revenue, the tech giant missed Wall Street projections for both sales and profitability. Furthermore, stakeholders grew anxious over massive outlays toward artificial intelligence infrastructure alongside softer-than-anticipated advertising metrics.
AI Search Puts Pressure on Advertising
Google’s traditional search business continues to serve as a primary revenue generator, yet artificial intelligence-driven search capabilities are altering how people search the web. Because these interactive experiences deliver direct responses, they may decrease the volume of ads encountered by users.
According to Alphabet, search advertising revenue climbed 12% compared to the prior year, reaching USD 63.35 billion. Nevertheless, this expansion pace lagged behind earlier quarters and failed to meet market forecasts.
These figures prompt inquiries regarding how Google can deploy artificial intelligence functions while preserving the ad-based model that has long sustained its operations. The enterprise is currently testing alternative methods to monetize AI-enhanced search through advertising.
AI Spending Pushes Cash Flow Into Negative Territory
Alphabet’s capital expenditure soared to USD 51.3 billion through the third quarter, largely propelled by spending on computing hardware, data centers, and artificial intelligence infrastructure. Consequently, the firm posted a negative free cash flow of roughly USD 9.1 billion, underscoring the monetary strain brought on by this rapid expansion.
Although revenue climbed 25% to hit USD 127.6 billion, net income dropped 25% down to USD 26.2 billion. This earnings miss compounded existing anxieties about the financial toll required to stay competitive in the artificial intelligence sector.

Google Cloud Offers a Bright Spot
Google Cloud revenue more than doubled, landing at USD 30.7 billion, propelled by strong enterprise demand for artificial intelligence infrastructure and services. This expansion demonstrates that Alphabet is indeed securing meaningful commercial revenue from AI, even as financial backers scrutinize its broader monetary fallout.
Going forward, the primary difficulty lies in converting these outlays into durable profits without destabilizing Google’s foundational advertising engine. Alphabet’s most recent disclosures have firmly established this delicate equilibrium as a foremost preoccupation for investors.
