On September 30, the UK’s Financial Conduct Authority opened the application window for cryptocurrency firm authorization, preceding the launch of a comprehensive regulatory framework next year. Companies wishing to maintain operations in the UK must submit their applications by February 28, 2027. The regulator will evaluate whether candidates fulfill its criteria before granting permission to supply regulated cryptoasset services under the upcoming framework.
FCA Sets Application Deadline for Crypto Firms
The updated crypto regulations officially launch on October 25, 2027, establishing benchmarks for consumer defense, the protection of customer assets, market fairness, and financial stability. These mandates broaden the FCA’s authority past its current financial promotion and anti-money laundering guidelines.
The FCA published its final crypto regulations and guidance during June 2026. These directives outline the obligations for companies operating inside the new structure, granting organizations time to get ready ahead of the enforcement date.
Filing an application, however, does not guarantee acceptance. Enterprises are required to prove they satisfy the regulator’s standards. Organizations unable to meet these conditions will be denied authorization and barred from providing regulated cryptoasset services within the UK.
Dominic Cashman, the FCA’s director of authorization, stated, “The UK’s new crypto regime will give consumers greater protections and firms a clear framework to operate in.”
He continued, “Firms can now apply for authorization and start preparing for regulation.”
Existing Registrations Will Not Transfer Automatically
Companies need to determine whether their active or proposed operations fall inside the scope of the new mandates. According to Arjun Lakhani, a counsel at the law firm Sidley, an organization’s current regulatory standing will dictate the specific application pathway it must take.
Businesses currently possessing FCA registration under the Money Laundering Regulations are required to seek full authorization featuring the appropriate permissions. Their present registration will not automatically transition them into the new oversight system.
Conversely, businesses that already possess FCA authorization might need to modify their current permissions to encompass newly regulated cryptoasset operations. This distinction requires companies to carefully evaluate both their offerings and existing permissions prior to application.
The FCA anticipates resolving applications filed within the application window prior to the commencement date in October 2027. Even so, the system provides provisions for established businesses whose applications remain under review when the regulations take effect.
Established companies that file a proper application throughout the submission period are permitted to keep delivering cryptoasset services while waiting for a determination. Subject to transitional provisions, they are also allowed to onboard new clients during that timeframe.
FCA Offers Support as Industry Prepares
To assist companies in drafting their submissions, the FCA facilitates pre-application consultations. Organizations have the option to schedule a support session prior to filing. Furthermore, the regulator supplies recorded webinars that break down its rules alongside the authorization procedure.
In tandem with these tools, the UK crypto services platform Zumo rolled out a UK Cryptoasset Regulation Tracker following the opening of the application period. The business explained that the tracker outlines specific duties against the regulated operations they pertain to, refreshing this mapping as additional regulatory documents are released.
The launch of applications also drew praise from The Payments Association. Emma Banymandhub, the organization’s chief executive, noted that the framework would deliver enhanced consumer transparency alongside access to a structured grievance procedure.
Nonetheless, Banymandhub emphasized that successful execution will dictate its effectiveness. She additionally advocated for a balanced strategy to back payment stablecoins and the UK’s ambitions to build out its digital asset industry.
Moving forward, applicants must determine the necessary permissions and assemble proof showing their operations fulfill the FCA’s mandates.
