AstraZeneca has entered into a multi-year partnership with the artificial intelligence biotechnology firm insitro to uncover potential therapies for complex liver and heart conditions. This collaboration leverages AI-powered research to pinpoint novel drug targets and advance treatments for diseases that currently have few options.
Disclosed on Thursday (October 15, 2026), the agreement requires AstraZeneca to provide an initial payment of USD 40 million to insitro. In addition, the California-based biotech may collect up to USD 1.46 billion in milestone payments tied to development and commercialization, plus royalties on future sales of any resulting products.
AI Research to Target Liver and Heart Conditions
The alliance concentrates on cardiomyopathies—diseases affecting the heart muscle—and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH), a severe liver condition.
Uncovering the fundamental biological drivers behind these illnesses has long proved difficult for researchers. Gaining clearer insight into these mechanisms can enable scientists to isolate promising drug targets and develop treatments aimed at the root causes.
The two companies plan to harness AI alongside biological research to investigate prospective therapies. Because the pact centers strictly on discovery and development, any generated medicines will require extensive further testing prior to patient use.
How insitro’s AI Platform Will Support Drug Discovery
Insitro intends to deploy its Virtual Human AI platform to examine the biological drivers of both conditions. This system merges machine learning with lab-grown cell models, allowing researchers to analyze disease mechanisms and spot potential targets for new pharmaceuticals.
Furthermore, insitro will tackle targets selected by AstraZeneca, steering promising leads from early-phase research toward becoming development candidates.
By utilizing AI-driven analysis, scientists can sift through intricate biological data to narrow down viable drug targets. This methodology assists research teams in making better-educated choices regarding which candidates warrant deeper exploration.
AstraZeneca to Lead Future Clinical Trials
Responsibility for funding and overseeing subsequent clinical trials for programs originating from the partnership falls to AstraZeneca. The drug maker will likewise secure exclusive global rights to advance chosen programs emerging from the joint effort.
This arrangement pairs insitro’s AI-based discovery capabilities with AstraZeneca’s extensive background in pharmaceutical development. Nonetheless, the ultimate financial value of the contract relies heavily on ongoing research milestones and overall progress.

insitro Expands Its Pharmaceutical Partnerships
With this move, AstraZeneca joins insitro’s expanding roster of industry partners. The biotech has previously collaborated with Bristol Myers Squibb to study amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a degenerative condition impacting nerve cells responsible for voluntary muscle control.
Additionally, insitro maintains a partnership with Eli Lilly aimed at building AI models to forecast how small-molecule drugs perform in living systems. This new contract emphasizes the broader pharmaceutical industry’s expanding enthusiasm for AI-supported research. Although the technology aids in spotting viable targets, its ultimate success relies on translating those findings into safe, effective treatments.
