Singaporean state investor Temasek has cautioned that a sudden downturn in the artificial intelligence sector could emerge as the primary threat to global markets by 2027. Rohit Sipahimalani, Temasek’s Chief Investment Officer, noted that while he does not anticipate an immediate shift, he acknowledged the possibility of volatility, stating, “We don’t see that as imminent, but will you have bumps in 2027? Yeah, possibly yes.”
Strong financial performances from major AI firms have boosted investor confidence, helping push leading US equities near all-time highs. Sipahimalani additionally identified interest rates and inflation as ongoing market hazards.
This cautionary outlook comes alongside Temasek’s continued financial commitment to the technology. The firm aims to elevate its AI portfolio exposure from roughly 6% to as high as 15% by 2031. Approximately half of Temasek’s existing AI holdings are in public markets, a proportion it intends to expand to between 70% and 75%. The investment scope encompasses cloud services, data centers, semiconductors, AI applications, and models.
A significant element of the unease stems from the massive capital expenditure flowing into the sector. Tech giants continue to pour vast amounts of money into infrastructure like data centers and processors. Although robust earnings have justified these expenditures thus far, investor patience could wane if financial returns fail to meet projections.

AI Does Not Need To Fail To Hurt Investors
Temasek’s advisory does not signal an impending collapse of the artificial intelligence industry. Instead, the primary danger may stem from overly inflated market expectations.
Numerous AI enterprises command valuations predicated on massive future expansion. Should this growth materialize below forecasts, investors might re-evaluate these pricing levels, causing stock values to drop regardless of ongoing technological progress.
Even as Temasek maintains its financial bets on the sector, it urges market participants to remain mindful of potential perils. Ultimately, the critical challenge will be determining whether AI earnings can match the immense financial outlays and lofty expectations surrounding the technology.
