Selecting a Multi-Gig Router: Speed, Wi-Fi, and Ports

2.5G WAN port: Select a router equipped with a minimum of one 2.5GbE WAN port to ensure your 1.5Gbps, 2Gbps, or faster internet connection avoids bottlenecks at the modem.

10GbE WAN port: When utilizing 5Gbps or 10Gbps fiber, look for a router featuring a 10GbE WAN port or SFP+ port to secure vital headroom that surpasses 2.5GbE limitations.

2.5G LAN ports: Assess your wired hardware beforehand—gaming computers, network-attached storage (NAS) drives, consoles, and switches all take advantage of dedicated 2.5GbE LAN connections.

10GbE LAN ports: While a 10GbE LAN connection benefits rapid NAS data transfers, high-performance workstations, or linking a multi-gig switch, it remains largely unnecessary for standard devices.

Wi-Fi 7 support: Upgrading to Wi-Fi 7 proves advantageous for multi-gig services, contemporary electronics, and reduced-latency Multi-Link Operation, particularly when operating on the 6GHz frequency.

Tri-band design: Opt for a tri-band Wi-Fi 7 configuration utilizing 2.4GHz, 5GHz, and 6GHz radios, which effectively isolates legacy hardware from high-speed 6GHz data streams.

Wireless speed ratings: Regard promotional speeds as laboratory ceilings instead of guaranteed everyday performance; consult third-party evaluations and prioritize steady throughput from your typical operating range.

Coverage and mesh: Expansive houses or spaces featuring dense walls often require a mesh setup or wired access points, since a robust single router cannot resolve every wireless dead zone.

Processor and memory: A capable central processing unit, sufficient memory, and reliable Quality of Service (QoS) tools assist in sustaining optimal speeds while numerous gadgets concurrently stream, play games, download files, or run smart-home automation.
