Sports merchandise shopping is getting an artificial intelligence upgrade through a new partnership between Fanatics and OpenAI. The sports retail platform has rolled out an enhanced iteration of its ‘Shop the Look’ tool, designed to suggest complementary gear tailored to the specific team and aesthetic of an item a buyer is browsing.
Currently live on Fanatics.com and the official online stores for the NFL, NBA, MLB, and NHL, the feature harnesses OpenAI technology to guide shoppers toward coordinated outfits without requiring them to sift through thousands of individual product pages.
How OpenAI Powers Fanatics’ Shopping Feature
By leveraging AI models, the updated Shop the Look capability evaluates product data, team specifics, and current inventory levels. When a customer inspects a team jersey, for instance, the platform can instantly recommend matching items such as caps and socks that pair well with the original selection.
To maintain relevance, Fanatics integrates its own merchandising guidelines into the process. This step is crucial for sports enthusiasts, who generally expect all recommended items to correspond with their chosen team rather than receiving generic clothing suggestions.
Because product lines and inventory shift constantly, the recommendations update on a daily basis. This ensures the tool only displays items that are actually in stock and available for purchase.
AI Recommendations Show Higher Engagement
Prior to the wider release, Fanatics and OpenAI trial-ran the system on roughly 30,000 MLB items. OpenAI reported that this upgraded iteration produced a 10% boost in user engagement compared to the legacy version of Shop the Look.
Additionally, the developers utilized OpenAI’s Codex to build and evaluate the recommendation mechanism. Initial testing for a pilot group of 50 products wrapped up in under 24 hours, after which the team implemented refinements based on feedback from Fanatics.
Following those trials, the system scaled up for broader rollout across thousands of items. The companies noted, however, that the reported uptick in engagement does not guarantee a matching rise in sales, as they have not yet revealed any official figures regarding revenue growth or conversion rates.
Managing a Catalog of More Than 1.5 Million Products
With an inventory exceeding 1.5 million unique items spread across its digital stores, Fanatics navigates a rapidly shifting retail landscape. New merchandise drops frequently, driven by major sporting events, championship victories, and roster updates.
Curating styled product bundles by hand for a catalog of this scale would demand immense resources. Turning to AI-generated recommendations allows Fanatics to keep its suggestions fresh while helping buyers seamlessly discover matching gear.
Ultimately, the business anticipates that the feature will minimize the effort required for fans to locate apparel aligned with their favorite teams and personal style.

AI Takes a Bigger Role in Online Shopping
This collaboration highlights a wider industry trend toward integrating AI into product discovery and tailored retail experiences. Moving beyond traditional search results, merchants are testing tools that grasp the contextual relationships between different products.
For Fanatics, the ultimate test lies in converting higher engagement into actual sales and an improved buyer journey. This latest deployment demonstrates AI moving beyond chatbots and into functional e-commerce solutions that assist consumers with purchasing decisions.
