In an escalation of their legal feud, OpenAI stated in an October 14 court filing that a former employee transferred more than 100 confidential documents concerning an unclosed device to personal accounts prior to rejoining Apple.
According to OpenAI, the dossier included comprehensive product graphics, engineering specifications, manufacturing metrics, and supplier particulars. The company further claims that the ex-staffer shared details about this unreleased hardware with high-ranking Apple executives several months prior to recent advancements in Apple’s artificial intelligence hardware sector. Meanwhile, Apple maintains it has uncovered no facts backing up these claims.
What OpenAI Says Was Taken
OpenAI’s filing outlines a portfolio of documents tied to a minimum of one device currently in the pipeline. These allegedly feature project files, hardware engineering insights, aesthetic finish guidelines, and documentation regarding component coating and sealing.
The organization asserts that the individual transferred the files to personal storage on June 2, 2026, which was their last day at OpenAI. Having originally come to OpenAI from Apple and spent roughly half a year there, the worker subsequently went back to the iPhone manufacturer.
OpenAI worries this data may now be available inside Apple and could impact its own hardware creation. That said, these claims remain unproven in a legal setting.
Apple Rejects the Allegations
Apple has disputed OpenAI’s assertions, emphasizing that it enforces guidelines meant to stop incoming staff from leveraging proprietary data from past employers. Furthermore, the firm informed Reuters that an internal review yielded no proof corroborating OpenAI’s charges.
This conflict unfolds amidst a broader rivalry within the growing AI hardware space. While Apple builds out its AI-driven product lineup, OpenAI is working on its own line of consumer hardware.
Although OpenAI’s court submission connects the disputed presentation to Apple’s recent strides in AI merchandise, it has not yet proven in public that the stolen data directly shaped any specific Apple product.
A Wider Trade Secrets Battle
These newest accusations stem from a broader litigation initially launched by Apple, which claimed that former workers walked away with trade secrets for OpenAI’s benefit. OpenAI has refuted any misconduct, asserting that its innovations were created entirely on its own.
This legal battle now centers on mutual accusations of trade-secret theft, workforce protocols, and the handling of sensitive hardware blueprints. Both corporations are fighting to safeguard their innovation pipelines as they venture deeper into AI-focused consumer technology.

What Happens Next?
OpenAI has requested permission from the court to probe the alleged actions and potentially file counterclaims. The direction of the lawsuit will dictate how these conflicting accusations are resolved.
At this stage, the core issue is still unsettled: whether proprietary OpenAI files were unlawfully moved and, subsequently, if they were viewed or utilized within Apple.
