Electronic Arts (EA) is dealing with a mounting wave of criticism from Mass Effect enthusiasts after someone spray-painted graffiti outside its Madrid, Spain, office demanding that the beloved gaming franchise be kept alive. The phrases, which included “SAVE MASS EFFECT,” were tagged near the entrance and on an outside wall of the facility.
Photographs of the vandalism surfaced on Reddit courtesy of a user who stumbled upon the markings while walking by the corporate site. This development represents a more aggressive escalation in the ongoing fan mobilization prompted by EA’s choice to shutter BioWare, the original developer behind the Mass Effect games.
Fans Escalate Campaign to Save Mass Effect
The spray-painted messages come on the heels of multiple prior efforts by supporters to persuade EA to reverse course. Most recently, backers pooled resources to run a 15-second promo spot in New York City’s Times Square to spotlight their cause.
Additionally, a Change.org petition advocating for the survival of Mass Effect has surpassed 250,000 signatures. Followers are pressing EA to keep the series alive moving forward, independently of BioWare.
Nevertheless, the graffiti has sparked debate within the gaming community. Although a portion of the fanbase sympathizes with the underlying anger of the demonstration, others are skeptical that destroying corporate property will advance their goals.
BioWare Closure Leaves Franchise Uncertain
EA’s choice to shutter BioWare effectively shutters the acclaimed developer of major role-playing properties like Mass Effect and Dragon Age. This action likewise led to the termination of the studio’s in-development Mass Effect title.
The studio shutdown occurred during a broader corporate reorganization at EA that reportedly involved eliminating approximately 400 positions. The publisher has redirected its strategic priorities toward initiatives perceived as more lucrative commercial prospects.

Will Fan Protests Change EA’s Decision?
The outlook for Mass Effect is still in limbo despite the expanding grassroots movement. EA has given no signal that it intends to undo the studio shutdown or bring back the scrapped game. The event underscores the deep bond linking the series to its player base, though it remains to be seen whether online petitions, high-profile ads, and street-level protests can actually move EA to alter its strategy.
