Meta is reportedly trialing a new Reels-first layout for Facebook in India, altering how participating users experience the platform upon opening the application. Rather than encountering the standard Feed upon launch, certain users are directed straight into a full-screen video interface.
This trial forms part of Meta’s wider initiative to place video at the heart of Facebook. The traditional Feed stays accessible via a distinct tab, and participants in the test are reportedly able to revert to a Feed-first setup.
Facebook Reels-First Experience Being Tested
As reported by TechCrunch, Facebook is actively evaluating this updated layout within India. Tom Alison, the head of Facebook, initially detailed this strategy in July, stating that Meta intended to trial the redesign in regions outside the U.S. where video consumption rates are especially elevated.
With this new interface, video replaces the conventional mix of text, photographs, and videos as the default landing page. Designated users reportedly retain the ability to opt out and revert to the standard Feed layout. Furthermore, the conventional Feed stays available through a distinct tab inside the app.
Historically, Meta has utilized India to pilot modifications to its short-form video offerings. Back in 2020, Instagram evaluated a dedicated Reels tab in India following the government’s ban on TikTok. Additionally, the corporation introduced a Reels-first interface to a select group of Instagram users in India and South Korea last year, which similarly launched directly into the video stream rather than the standard Feed.

Why India Matters to Meta’s Video Strategy
India holds crucial significance for Meta’s video initiatives owing to its massive audience. Referencing Meta’s advertising metrics, the report indicates that Facebook boasts a user base exceeding 400 million in India, cementing the nation as Meta’s largest market based on user volume.
This Facebook trial also aligns with Meta’s wider pivot toward video across its social media ecosystem. The firm has consistently emphasized Reels as a primary mechanism for content discovery and consumption.
At present, the Reels-first Facebook layout is restricted to an evaluation phase. Meta has not announced plans to substitute the conventional Feed entirely for all members. This trial enables the organization to evaluate user reactions to a Facebook environment centered around full-screen video.
