Apple is deploying a novel system across its retail locations to combat iPhone return fraud. This technology enables staff to scan a sealed iPhone box and inspect the device enclosed within without breaking the packaging seal.
Mark Gurman of Bloomberg reported that Apple began distributing the equipment to stores earlier in the month, allowing employees to verify whether a returned iPhone is present, fully intact, and operational before returning it to inventory.
Decoding the Scanner
When staff members scan a sealed box, the system initiates diagnostics on the enclosed iPhone to detect any missing units, removed components, or indicators of tampering. This technology reportedly mirrors the mechanism behind Apple’s “Presto” system—which updates software on iPhones while they stay sealed in their original retail boxes—having now been modified for return verifications.
Should the device pass the scan, the sealed box can immediately re-enter inventory without requiring workers to open every returned package or route potentially sellable merchandise away for additional examination to check for the phone, accessories, or internal components, as dishonest customers often count on staff accepting the box unverified.
Why Apple Needs It
The technology company has contended with an escalating issue involving customers returning iPhone boxes after removing their contents. Previously, personnel generally had to open returned iPhone packaging to verify the contents; while this caught fraudulent activity, it also resulted in authentic, sealed items being categorized as unopenable and treated as unsellable stock.
This scanner provides employees with a faster method to distinguish legitimate returns from fraudulent ones, safeguarding inventory and minimizing financial losses from scams. The system is currently restricted to iPhones, and because Apple issued no formal announcement, industry experts note that the exact distribution count among retail stores remains undetermined.
