Amazon has overhauled its Kindle e-reader hardware line in one of its most substantial redesigns in years. By eliminating the raised screen border, the company has made the devices lighter, slimmer, and more portable. Announced on October 1, 2026, the updated Kindle lineup features new base models, Kindle Paperwhite editions, Kindle Colorsoft units, and dedicated kids’ versions. These redesigned e-readers are rolling out in the US, Canada, the UK, Japan, Australia, and select nations throughout Europe and the Middle East.
The shift to a flush-front display, which eliminates the physical step between the screen and the outer frame, is the most prominent aesthetic update. Although the classic bezel provided a resting spot for readers’ fingers, Amazon implemented an advanced touch system that detects thumb placement and establishes a temporary zone to block accidental inputs.
New Kindle Gets Thinner and Lighter
Featuring a thickness of just 6.8mm and a weight of 140 grams, the standard six-inch Kindle is noticeably slimmer and lighter than its predecessor. Additionally, Amazon reported performance gains, noting that page turns operate roughly 30% faster.
Priced from $149.99, the base model is offered in Graphite and Ube. For the first time, Amazon is also providing an aluminum-backed configuration packed with 32GB of storage, available in fresh hues like Alpine Sky and Seaglass Green.
Paperwhite and Colorsoft Also Get a Makeover
This design overhaul goes beyond the basic Kindle. The Kindle Paperwhite sheds thickness and weight while keeping its large screen size and high-contrast display intact. The standard 16GB configuration starts at $199.99, with the 32GB Signature Edition priced at $249.99.
The Kindle Colorsoft—Amazon’s inaugural color e-reader introduced in 2024—now incorporates the flush-front aesthetic as well. The 16GB variant begins at $289.99, whereas the 32GB Signature Edition is priced at $319.99. Both options introduce fresh color variations.

New Kindles Roll Out Across Global Markets
While the standard Kindle and its aluminum counterpart are currently available for purchase in multiple countries, the refreshed Paperwhite and Colorsoft are open for preorder. Furthermore, Amazon maintains its Kids lineup, which includes a color Kindle Colorsoft option designed for younger audiences.
Alongside the updated hardware, Amazon unveiled new accessories such as the Kindle Click, a Bluetooth remote enabling hands-free page turns. The company is also launching a protective cover equipped with physical page-turn buttons tailored for specific premium models.
