Microsoft is currently trialing a standalone, pay-as-you-go option for Xbox Cloud Gaming that allows users to stream games without requiring a Game Pass subscription. The pricing for this new tier starts at USD 3.99 for 10 hours of playtime. At the moment, the feature is rolling out exclusively to Xbox Insiders who currently lack an active Game Pass membership, with a public release scheduled for all users in November.
How the Pricing Works
Xbox has rolled out three distinct prepaid bundles. The baseline package gives players 10 hours for USD 3.99, which breaks down to roughly 40 cents per hour. Larger tiers include a 25-hour pack priced at USD 7.99 and a 50-hour pack available for USD 11.99.
Opting for the bigger bundles yields a better value. The 25-hour package lowers the hourly cost to roughly 32 cents, whereas the 50-hour bundle decreases it further to about 24 cents per hour. Microsoft has characterized these options as launch introductory pricing, implying that final costs may be adjusted following the broader release.
Before widening access, Microsoft intends to collect user feedback from the Xbox Insider group. The tech giant has yet to disclose international pricing or verify whether these introductory rates will persist past the month of November.
What Players Get
In contrast to traditional subscription models, these purchased hours do not reset on a monthly basis. Users are free to utilize their hours until the entire balance is depleted. The pay-as-you-go offering features:
-
Ad-free cloud gaming
-
Shorter wait times
-
Higher-quality streaming
This framework is designed for casual and sporadic players who prefer to avoid monthly recurring commitments. Furthermore, it grants gamers greater financial control since they only pay for the exact playtime they anticipate consuming.
The new model separates cloud access from a Game Pass subscription, potentially reaching users who want to stream supported games without a monthly plan. The move could widen Xbox’s cloud gaming audience. It may also help the company compete with other cloud gaming services by offering a low-cost entry point.
