On October 28, Reddit debuted its new For You feed, offering users a choice of two homepage layouts across its global platform. By pairing personalized recommendations with a dedicated Following feed, the update is designed to help members find communities outside of their current subscriptions. The redesigned interface is slated for a worldwide rollout across the platform over the next few weeks.
The For You feed merges content from joined communities with algorithmic recommendations tailored to user interests. In contrast, the Following feed exclusively shows posts from communities the user has explicitly joined. According to Reddit, this update is intended to foster discovery, engagement, and deeper connections, while simultaneously providing users with greater command over their browsing experience.
Reddit Follows the Recommendation-Driven Social Media Trend
This overhaul aligns Reddit with other major platforms like TikTok, Instagram, X, Threads, and Facebook, all of which rely on recommendation engines to surface material from outside a user’s direct subscriptions. Although Reddit has a history of suggesting external posts, the updated layout establishes a separate, dedicated stream strictly for discovery.
In its official announcement, Reddit framed the feature as a mechanism to uncover fresh perspectives and concepts. The company noted that the feature has the potential to guide users toward a novel idea, connection, unique viewpoint, or fresh interest. Ultimately, the adjustment highlights Reddit’s goal of integrating community discovery more prominently into the homepage experience.
Users Can Keep their Existing Feed Preferences
This new design might not suit individuals who want exclusively to view posts from their chosen communities. During the initial testing phases, some Reddit users voiced annoyance, particularly concerning recommendations intermingling with familiar conversations. For those seeking a streamlined browsing session, the distinct Following feed serves as a viable alternative.
Members retain the ability to toggle between the two feeds at will, and the platform will retain their previous choice. Once the initial deployment concludes, Reddit will default to displaying whichever feed the user accessed most recently. Consequently, individuals can browse recommendations without sacrificing their traditional community-centric feed permanently.
The international rollout is set to proceed across the upcoming weeks. Furthermore, Reddit stated that it will persist in testing discovery features and controls designed to fine-tune recommendations.
