OpenAI has upgraded its Chrome extension for ChatGPT, allowing the chatbot to pull information directly from a user’s open browser tabs. While in standard Chat mode, users can prompt ChatGPT to evaluate products, condense research findings, or pull specific facts across multiple web pages.
This enhancement eliminates the tedious process of copying and pasting text from various tabs. For instance, a shopper can leave multiple sofa listings open and direct ChatGPT to evaluate their prices, materials, and delivery conditions.
Work Mode Takes Action
The most significant upgrade arrives with ChatGPT Work, OpenAI’s autonomous agent designed for extended and complex assignments. Given the proper authorization, this agent can manipulate Chrome tabs to dispatch messages, complete web forms, and retrieve files.
Additionally, it can sort and organize open browser tabs. According to OpenAI, the Work agent can leverage data from one webpage—such as event details—to finish a task on a separate page, like completing a registration form, pausing beforehand for user approval.
To get started, users must download the ChatGPT extension from the Chrome Web Store. Once installed, they need to launch ChatGPT via the web or desktop application and reference Chrome using an “@” symbol within a ChatGPT Work or Codex conversation. Configuration is also accessible through the Computer Use menu located in the desktop app settings.
How to Enable it
The extension is additionally compatible with Edge, Brave, Opera, and Vivaldi. While Opera supports browser control and tab mentions, it lacks the Side Chat functionality. Through Side Chat, users can query open tabs, ask about selected text snippets, or generate summaries of YouTube videos.
OpenAI notes, “ Users should confirm that the browser displays a Manage option before selecting it for tab access.ChatGPT can also create or edit documents, spreadsheets and slides, enter data into business systems and download files in bulk.” Built for administrative duties, research, and repetitive online workflows, the tool shines when projects stretch across numerous websites or demand data transfer between different pages.
