If you enjoy gathering physical game cartridges or handing your favorite titles over to friends, Nintendo has reassuring news. Even as digital downloads grow more common throughout the gaming industry, the company has no immediate plans to discontinue physical media.
During an interview at Brasil Game Show 2026, Bill van Zyll, Nintendo’s vice president and general manager for Latin America, outlined the company’s strategy. He verified that Nintendo is listening to consumer demand and that physical games continue to hold a role in its operations. While this does not mean cartridges will last forever, Nintendo is not rushing to phase them out right now.
Switch 2 Players Still Have a Choice
The Switch 2, Nintendo’s latest console, accommodates both digital and physical games. Depending on personal preference, users can either download a title directly or purchase a physical cartridge from a store. Maintaining both formats is logical for Nintendo, as not all players want a digital library linked strictly to an account. While some users appreciate collecting boxed editions, others prefer buying a title, completing it, and handing it off to a friend.
Furthermore, Nintendo has not set a timeline for halting physical releases. This stance indicates that the company prefers adapting to shifts in consumer purchasing behavior over forcing every buyer toward digital downloads.
Not Every Physical Game Works the Same Way
However, there is a caveat for anyone who thinks buying a physical Switch 2 game always includes the entire game stored on a cartridge. The new console also supports game-key cards. Instead of holding all the game data, these cards function as keys used to download and play the software. Although the physical card is necessary to access the game, an internet connection is required to complete the initial download.
This distinction is important for collectors who want a physical item that does not require downloading massive files. Even though standard game cards and game-key cards may look identical on retail shelves, they deliver very different experiences.

Digital Gaming is Growing, but Nintendo Isn’t Following Blindly
Digital distribution continues to expand across the gaming sector. Downloads offer convenience by removing the need to visit a store or wait for deliveries, while publishers appreciate the margins of selling directly through online storefronts.
Despite this, physical copies provide benefits that digital titles often lack: an item that can be shown off, traded, or resold, depending on the format and any applicable restrictions.
Nintendo’s recent remarks will not put an end to the ongoing debate regarding the future of physical media. Nonetheless, they establish that the company is unwilling to drop cartridges simply because the wider industry is shifting toward digital-only models. For owners of the Switch 2, physical releases remain a part of Nintendo’s strategy for the present.
