Spotify has introduced a QR code verification system for Premium Family subscriptions, forcing certain members to verify their co-residence with the plan administrator. Users who miss the seven-day verification window risk losing access to the shared account and facing a one-year ban from participating in any other Family or Duo plan.
This update targets the widespread practice of users sharing discounted subscription tiers with acquaintances or family members residing elsewhere. Although Spotify’s existing Premium Family guidelines mandate that all users share a single household, the QR code implementation provides an additional enforcement mechanism. Documentation on Spotify’s support page verifies that select Premium Family accounts may be selected for this audit.
How Spotify’s QR Code Verification Works
Successful verification demands that both the plan administrator and the designated member are physically present together with their mobile devices. The manager must open the Spotify application, go to the Premium settings menu, and generate the QR code for the other user to scan with their own smartphone.
Per Spotify, the check must take place inside the mobile app using the most current software update on both devices. Because the QR code refreshes every few seconds, attempts to use static screenshots are rendered ineffective.
Impacted members are given a seven-day window to perform the scan following the receipt of an alert. The company has not clarified the criteria for selecting specific accounts or the broader rollout schedule for this feature.
Failing to meet the deadline carries heavy penalties. Support documentation indicates that individuals who neglect the QR verification are barred from entering a different Duo or Family plan for a period of 12 months, though alternative subscription tiers remain available.

Spotify’s Fight Against Account Sharing
Spotify has maintained household stipulations for its Family plans for a long time. While the offering permits individuals at the exact same location to use individual accounts via one bill, distributing the savings to outside addresses violates the service agreement.
For current users, the recommended course of action is straightforward: upon receiving a verification prompt, respond to the notification and finish the steps within the seven-day limit. Anyone who cannot complete the check should reach out to Spotify support instead of expecting their current Family plan status to remain unchanged.
