Meta Platforms has rolled out Muse Spark Open, an open-weight artificial intelligence model tailored for developers creating coding assistants and AI agents. The company describes the release as the premier open-weight model produced in the U.S. to date.
Unlike closed alternatives, Muse Spark Open provides access to trained parameters, or weights, allowing developers to download and execute or modify the software on local infrastructure. This launch broadens developer options, though Meta maintains ownership of its highest-tier proprietary systems.
Built for Coding and Agents
Engineered specifically for software engineering, complex multi-step reasoning, and prolonged agentic workflows, Muse Spark Open is optimized for coding applications. Meta states the model excels at tasks demanding structured planning, tool integration, and continuous execution, moving beyond basic single-turn answers.
As a natively multimodal system, it processes text, images, audio, and video inputs while producing text outputs, positioning it effectively for enterprise automation, customer service agents, and developer tools. Muse Spark Open incorporates 816 billion total parameters, engaging approximately 42 billion active parameters per token. Furthermore, its one-million-token context window enables the evaluation of extensive code repositories, massive documents, and long session histories all at once.
Apple Partnership Stands Out
In a partnership with Apple, Meta optimized Muse Spark Open for Mac systems. Utilizing Apple’s MLX framework, developers can execute the model locally across a pair of Apple M5 Ultra Mac Studio computers. Additionally, Meta has distributed the model via multiple API providers:
-
Baseten
-
Fireworks AI
-
Groq
-
Modal
-
Nebius
-
OpenRouter
-
Together AI
Developers are able to acquire the model weights through Hugging Face, Amazon SageMaker AI, Google Cloud Model Garden, and Microsoft Foundry Models. Meta notes that safety measures were integrated into the release, though the governing license places specific limitations on deployment methods. This setup is significant for introducing a massive AI model directly to desktop environments. Available for free download via the Muse Model License, the software allows for restricted commercial applications.
