Activision and Infinity Ward have announced that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 will provide DMZ early access starting on October 20, 2026, ahead of the game’s global release on October 23. This rollout applies to qualified digital pre-orders on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch 2. Additionally, the schedule features campaign early access beginning October 16, offering purchasers a head start prior to the complete launch.
The title becomes available globally on October 23, deploying both DMZ and the main multiplayer modes to players. Through this release, Activision seeks to reconstruct the extraction mode by introducing persistent progression, open-world combat, and fresh avenues for squad-oriented interactions.
These early-access incentives are restricted to qualifying digital editions, meaning physical copies lack these pre-order advantages.
DMZ Returns with a Bigger Ambition
Set within the Hajin Exclusion Zone, the updated DMZ mode challenges participants to loot, combat, negotiate, and extract. Users have the option to deploy independently or within squads while preserving their operational progress. Infinity Ward characterizes this refreshed mode as a more fully realized extraction shooter than its predecessor.
Originally debuting in 2022’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, DMZ brought extraction mechanics to the franchise. Although it received updates prior to Activision halting support in late 2023, its comeback in Modern Warfare 4 represents a renewed effort to solidify extraction gameplay within the Call of Duty series.
In a behind-the-scenes video, Infinity Ward multiplayer creative director Joe Cecot reflected on insights gained from the prior iteration. He characterized the initial experience as an accessible sandbox centered on combat, exploration, and player engagement. Furthermore, Cecot noted that the team recognized unfulfilled concepts and approached the new development phase with a sharper vision.
Vault Edition Offers Additional DMZ Benefits
Buyers of the Vault Edition gain a DMZ Deployment Bonus in addition to early-access privileges. This bundle supplies an extra Active Duty slot alongside gear like Weapon Insurance Contracts, Operator Rescue Beacons, backpacks, and armor carriers.
Instead of the franchise’s principal multiplayer modes, the early-access period centers exclusively on the campaign and DMZ. Those standard multiplayer features debut alongside the full October 23 launch. This phased release allows eligible purchasers multiple days to explore the campaign and extraction mode before the broader community logs on.
