Although Marvel’s Wolverine enjoyed a robust launch, its sales pace has noticeably cooled off in the weeks following its debut. Newly released financial data from Sony indicates that the PlayStation 5 exclusive reached 2.4 million copies sold globally during its first 50 days on the market, sparking debate over whether the title can achieve the same level of commercial success seen with Insomniac Games’ Spider-Man series.
These numbers stem from Sony’s Q2 earnings report, offering a clearer overview of the title’s commercial performance. Previously, market research firm Alinea Analytics projected that Wolverine would hit 1.9 million units sold within just three days of hitting shelves, translating to USD 130 million in revenue.
Assuming those early projections hold true, the title managed to move a mere 500,000 additional units across the subsequent weeks. This points to a trajectory where initial consumer demand vastly outpaced post-launch uptake.

Spider-Man Set a Much Higher Benchmark
This deceleration becomes even more apparent when stacking the game up against Insomniac’s prior superhero projects. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 managed to push five million units in a mere ten days, buoyed heavily by widespread audience enthusiasm and the built-in popularity of the IP.
Critical reception for Wolverine has proven somewhat divided. While reviewers praised the title’s combat mechanics and depiction of the lead character, certain criticisms were directed at elements of the game design.
Even with the decelerating sales velocity, the title is far from a financial flop. Circana figures show it claimed the spot as the top-selling game in the US for September 2026, securing its place as one of the sturdier new offerings from PlayStation Studios this year.

Can Wolverine Maintain Long-Term Sales?
The next challenge for Sony and Insomniac lies in sustaining player engagement past the initial release window. Upcoming patches, holiday promotions, and seasonal price cuts might draw in more customers. Even so, keeping pace with Spider-Man’s sales figures could prove challenging; while Wolverine has carved out a substantial player base, its early metrics indicate that maintaining momentum will likely prove more difficult than sparking initial hype.
