According to an October 19 Reuters report, Jio Platforms secured approximately USD 25 billion in anchor investor bids for its USD 3.2 billion initial public offering. Global institutions generated demand that was nearly 30 times the size of the company’s reserved anchor quota, emphasizing strong investor confidence in Jio’s market scale and its growth into artificial intelligence and cloud computing.
Among the reported participants were Singapore’s GIC, BlackRock, Fidelity, and the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority. Jio kicked off its institutional bidding on Monday, setting the stage for public subscriptions to open on October 21. By seeking to raise as much as USD 3.2 billion, the company could achieve a valuation of roughly USD 108.3 billion.
Global Investors Target India’s Biggest IPO
Led by Akash Ambani, Jio houses the telecom and digital units of Reliance Industries. Its portfolio spans mobile connectivity, fixed broadband, enterprise tech, entertainment, cloud services, and AI initiatives. Back in 2016, Jio completely reshaped the Indian telecommunications landscape by launching inexpensive data packages and complimentary voice calls.
Presently, Jio boasts a subscriber base exceeding 500 million, locking horns with rivals Vodafone Idea and Bharti Airtel. This market debut will serve as a barometer for how the market prices its expansive subscriber network alongside its broadening technological goals.
IPO Proceeds Could Reduce Telecom Debt
Jio plans to allocate up to Rs. 27,500 crore from the share sale toward paying off or pre-paying debt at Reliance Jio Infocomm. Furthermore, this transaction represents the first major public offering for Reliance Industries since Reliance Petroleum went public back in 2006.
This robust demand from anchor participants coincides with an expansion in India’s IPO market activity and larger capital-raising campaigns. Reuters noted that total proceeds from Indian public offerings reached USD 12.65 billion for the year to date, marking an 8.3% increase compared to the same timeframe last year.
While anchor commitments reflect high interest, they do not ensure definitive share allotments or a successful market debut. A more comprehensive assessment will emerge once the public subscription period opens on October 21 and concludes on October 23. Market reports indicate that the shares are slated to begin trading on October 28.
