French grocery chain Intermarché is managing a significant cybersecurity breach after approximately 150 of its locations were hit in a strike that compromised refrigeration units and put food safety at risk. The event, made public on Monday, October 12, 2026, underscores growing anxieties regarding the security of connected machinery within critical retail infrastructure.
Les Mousquetaires, the parent company of Intermarché, verified the breach and stated that all compromised food items were thrown out to avert any health hazards. This occurrence demonstrated how cyberattacks are capable of transcending purely digital realms to inflict tangible physical and economic harm on enterprises.
Refrigeration Systems Manipulated During Attack
The company stated that cooling units in the impacted branches were elevated to temperatures reaching 50 degrees Celsius for roughly a six-hour window. Environments like this spoil the integrity of chilled and frozen goods, rendering them unsafe for purchase or eating.
Intermarché discarded the compromised inventory, resulting in extra logistical hurdles for on-site staff. Tying refrigeration machinery into digital networks leaves open the possibility that security flaws can disrupt the routine operations of a grocery store.
Other French Supermarkets Also Reported Affected
The breach seems to reach further than just Intermarché. French media coverage on October 12 revealed that Coopérative U — operator of banners such as Super U and Hyper U — similarly encountered troubles with its cooling infrastructure.
Roughly 100 of its stores were reportedly impacted. Further accounts pointed to potential disruptions at alternative supermarket networks like E.Leclerc, Carrefour Market, and Monoprix, though those assertions had not universally been verified independently by the corporations involved.
These broader accounts imply the event may impact the wider French retail industry rather than remaining isolated to one brand. Nevertheless, the total count of impacted branches and the aggregate monetary toll are still undetermined.

French officials have verified that a cyberattack took place, and sources note the event additionally sparked fires at a few sites. Investigators face the task of determining how the attackers accessed the systems, which hardware was breached, and whether several retail enterprises were breached via a shared security weakness.
