Google released Nano Banana 2.1 on October 6, 2026, marking the debut of its newest image generation and editing model. Powered by Gemini 3.6 Flash, the software delivers enhanced visual fidelity and editing capabilities while reducing API image generation expenses by half. The company is deploying Nano Banana 2.1 across AI Studio, Flow, Stitch, Gemini, Search AI Mode, Google Ads, and enterprise platforms. This update is designed for developers and creators who need crisper visuals, more consistent subjects, and cost-effective high-volume production.
The model accommodates 1K, 2K, and 4K resolutions alongside exceptionally wide and vertical aspect ratios. It is capable of handling as many as 14 reference images to track four distinct characters and ten objects throughout consecutive editing steps. Additionally, Google integrated search grounding, enabling the model to draw data from both Google Search and Google Image Search during generation. Developers are also provided with three thinking levels to fine-tune speed, layout complexity, and prompt precision.
The most notable change is economic, with standard output rates dropping to USD 30 per million tokens. Generating a 1K image is now priced at USD 0.0336, down from approximately USD 0.067 with Nano Banana 2. Meanwhile, 2K outputs cost USD 0.0504 and 4K generations are priced at USD 0.0756 per image. For bulk generation, batch processing reduces these output costs by an additional 50%.
Editing accuracy is enhanced via refined mask-based tools and superior subject consistency. The system can modify designated regions while keeping adjacent elements untouched, an advantage for product designers and campaign updates. Furthermore, improved text rendering aids in the creation of labels, posters, infographics, ads, and other graphics.
According to Google, Nano Banana 2.1 “outperforms our previous models across the board” through various enhancements in image creation and editing. The tech giant pointed to visual design, subject consistency, and mask-driven editing as key advancements.
The release additionally incorporates C2PA Content Credentials to trace digital provenance within compatible workflows. Internal evaluations documented in Google’s model card show stronger performance in editing, multi-reference tasks, and character continuity. Nano Banana 2.1 is available now via the Gemini API as its wider product deployment proceeds.
