Artificial intelligence is transforming the digital apparel market with a newly launched feature from OpenAI. ChatGPT now includes a virtual try-on capability designed to show shoppers how garments and accessories will appear on their bodies prior to purchase.
When users browse eligible fashion listings within ChatGPT’s shopping results, a new “Try On” button appears. By clicking this option and uploading a selfie, shoppers receive a generated image of themselves wearing the chosen item. This tool is currently rolling out worldwide across the mobile and web versions of ChatGPT.
How ChatGPT’s Virtual Try-On Works
Shoppers begin by locating a clothing or accessory item within ChatGPT. After clicking “Try On,” they upload an appropriate photo, prompting the platform to create a visual preview using its built-in image generation capabilities.
This functionality is not restricted to items found strictly within ChatGPT shopping results. Customers can also upload a screenshot or photo of a garment and ask ChatGPT to visualize the piece on them. Consequently, shoppers can utilize items found on social media platforms or external websites as well.
OpenAI notes that this capability is driven by ChatGPT Images, emphasizing recent enhancements in lighting, material textures, and adherence to prompts.

New Favorites Feature Added
OpenAI has additionally rolled out a “Favorites” function, enabling users to bookmark items for future reference. Shoppers can save products and sort them into custom folders inside the ChatGPT Library.
Furthermore, reference photos uploaded for the virtual try-on tool can be stored for later use, with options to update or delete these images directly through the settings menu in ChatGPT.
AI Preview does Not Guarantee Fit
Although this addition enhances the visual aspect of retail browsing, OpenAI issues a warning that the generated images might not provide a precise depiction of the physical item or the individual’s true appearance. Furthermore, the previews do not serve as a guarantee of correct sizing or fit.
The company advises buyers to review the retailer’s sizing charts, item details, and return guidelines prior to completing any transactions.
This release builds upon OpenAI’s expanding footprint in commerce-related AI. Having previously enabled product search and comparison, ChatGPT now advances the user journey by offering personalized visual previews ahead of checkout.
