German luxury automaker BMW is getting ready for a significant corporate overhaul by scaling up its deployment of artificial intelligence throughout the business. By mid-2027, the company intends to slash the number of divisions and related management positions by 20%, alongside similar cuts further down the organizational hierarchy.
BMW Targets Profitability Recovery
BMW anticipates that AI systems will speed up development cycles and optimize workflows that typically demand multiple layers of management. The manufacturer aims to utilize AI more broadly to assist with tasks spanning from technical specifications and testing to product launches.
This reorganization is part of a broader plan to streamline decision-making, boost efficiency, and reinforce financial returns. According to BMW, “AI will play a growing role across its value chain, from vehicle development and purchasing to production and aftersales operations.”
This initiative mirrors a wider industry trend toward automation and software-centered manufacturing among international carmakers. For BMW, the shift arrives amid intensifying competition—especially in China—coupled with the burden of tariffs and the expensive transition to electric vehicles.
AI Becomes Central to BMW’s Efficiency Drive
This management shakeup runs parallel to a previously disclosed workforce reduction initiative. BMW intends to cut approximately 8,000 jobs, focusing mainly on administrative and support services, utilizing voluntary separation packages and natural staff turnover.
The company further explained, “The German production workforce is not the focus of these reductions. Instead, BMW continues to invest in domestic manufacturing and battery production as it prepares for its next generation of vehicles.” Furthermore, the carmaker is revamping its vehicle lineup, scheduling the launch of a fresh entry-level electric model in Europe and a full-sized SUV positioned above the current X7 in the United States.
