Canva has introduced Canva Craft, marking the debut of its first proprietary image generation model created by its internal research team. This release represents a significant transition for the design platform, which previously relied primarily on external AI models to power its generative capabilities.
With Craft, Canva enters the rapidly expanding AI image market alongside major players such as Google, OpenAI, ByteDance, and Meta. Diverging from competitors focused predominantly on photography, Canva engineered this model specifically for design applications, tailoring it to posters, presentations, social media assets, infographics, menus, and other structured layouts.
A Two-Step Design Process
The operation of Craft unfolds across two distinct phases. Initially, the system parses a user’s prompt to formulate a visual layout strategy encompassing spatial arrangement, proportional scaling, visual hierarchy, and typography placement. According to the company, Craft represents its inaugural foundational model developed and trained entirely from the ground up by Canva Research, granting the platform heightened oversight regarding image fidelity, editing pipelines, financial overhead, and feature evolution.
During the subsequent phase, the model executes the rendering process. It is capable of generating graphics reaching up to 2K resolution across more than 30 different aspect ratios, alongside custom dimensions. Consequently, the tool accommodates platform-specific requirements for social channels, web assets, print materials, and slide decks.
Furthermore, Canva noted that this strategy-first methodology enables Craft to manage design components with greater precision. By prioritizing structural organization, hierarchy, and modifiable layouts, the technology distinguishes itself from conventional general-purpose image tools.
Built for Editable Design
Assets generated by Craft can transition into multi-layered, customizable compositions via Canva Magic, the platform’s proprietary image-to-design conversion tool. Following generation, users retain the ability to reposition components, modify typography, and adjust overall arrangements.
Canva Craft is presently rolling out to all users inside the Dream Lab tab, accessible via the lower-left navigation pane of the Canva workspace. Additionally, developers can access Craft via the public Canva API. The company anticipates that product developers will incorporate the technology into advertising software, e-commerce platforms, marketing suites, and printing services, a step that may expand the model’s footprint in high-volume content production.
