Fans of the Blade Runner franchise can look forward to a brand-new board game. Developer Lucky Duck Games announced the project at the Spiel Essen convention in Germany, the world’s largest board game event. This tabletop adaptation will feature a narrative distinct from the upcoming Blade Runner 2099 television series.
In this cooperative game, participants work together to crack cases within a setting where humans, rather than replicants, face persecution. The experience will also incorporate a digital app to handle narration and additional mechanics. Lucky Duck Games has scheduled a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign for 2027, though an exact launch date has not yet been determined.
Development of the board game is happening concurrently with the TV series, which premieres for Prime Video users on November 25, 2026. The show centers on an undercover police narrative. Although the game and the series share a title and a universe, their plots remain separate. The tabletop project concentrates on its own distinct mystery, and it remains unconfirmed whether the characters inhabit the same immediate social circles or storylines.
According to early reports, participants will team up to investigate mysteries and advance through the game. Specifics regarding player counts, session lengths, and complete rulebooks have not been released yet. Additional updates are expected to emerge ahead of the Kickstarter debut.
Why the Board Game and TV Series Tell Different Stories
Although both Blade Runner 2099 adaptations inhabit the same overarching universe, they remain separate entities with unique storylines and events. This separation allows each project the freedom to examine themes of identity, power, and systemic mistreatment from its own perspective.
Enjoying the board game does not require watching the television series, and conversely, viewers do not need to play the game to understand the show. Each medium provides an independent entry point into the Blade Runner setting.
