Workday has initiated a new wave of workforce reductions, impacting approximately 2.5% of its employees on September 29, 2026. The enterprise software enterprise intends to eliminate about 500 positions, primarily focusing on its product and technology departments.
According to Workday, this organizational overhaul is designed to synchronize teams with key strategic growth objectives and reorganize specific office locations. The business anticipates that the majority of these staffing transitions will unfold throughout fiscal 2027, pending local regulatory obligations.
These new reductions represent Workday’s second round of job cuts this year, following February reductions that eliminated roughly 400 jobs. Headquartered in Pleasanton, California, the firm reported a headcount exceeding 21,000 workers at the conclusion of its fiscal year in January.
Workday anticipates restructuring expenses ranging between USD 65 million and USD 80 million, stemming from personnel adjustments and facilities downsizing. The enterprise estimates that USD 55 million to USD 70 million of these expenses will be recognized in the fiscal third quarter.
Additionally, the reorganization will weigh on Workday’s GAAP operating margin during the fiscal third quarter. The company projects this margin will land roughly 20 to 21 percentage points under its non-GAAP margin. Meanwhile, the corporation maintained its overarching fiscal 2027 revenue and non-GAAP operating margin forecasts without modification.
Workday intends to maintain recruitment efforts in critical strategic sectors and regions over the course of fiscal 2027. This strategy points to a reallocation of personnel toward specific corporate objectives instead of a universal hiring freeze. The workforce-related restructuring measures are projected to be largely finalized by the first quarter of fiscal 2028.
The previous February layoffs primarily impacted customer operations and other non-revenue-generating departments amid a prior corporate realignment.
Conversely, this newest round places a heavier emphasis on Product and Technology positions, shifting the direction of the corporate restructure. Alongside the personnel cuts, Workday trimmed certain leased office spaces as part of the ongoing operational adjustments.
Workday has not pointed to artificial intelligence as an explicit driver for either round of job reductions announced in 2026. At the same time, the wider enterprise software sector has contended with investor anxieties regarding AI’s potential influence on software demand.
Aneel Bhusri, co-founder of Workday, has consistently defended the company’s standing among corporate clients. During August, Bhusri stated that customers were not looking to substitute Workday with internally developed software or startup alternatives.
Consequently, the most recent Workday layoffs merge financial restructuring with a narrower concentration on chosen expansion sectors. The enterprise now confronts a substantial restructuring expense while persisting with targeted recruitment in vital segments of the business.
