Walmart has rolled out new features enabling artificial intelligence agents to shop and execute transactions for customers. This development represents a significant advancement in the retail giant’s entry into agentic commerce, a system where AI assistants manage everyday purchasing choices for shoppers.
Agent Profiles Put Users in Charge
Agent Profiles form the core of this release. Rolling out within the next month, Walmart will assign every authorized AI agent a unique identity within a user’s Walmart account. The retailer detailed the project on Wednesday via its corporate newsroom, noting that the system will accommodate AI assistants from ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and Meta’s Muse.
Users will be able to review purchases made by each individual agent independently from their personal orders. Additionally, shoppers have the ability to terminate an agent’s permissions whenever they choose. This framework is designed to ensure transparency and accountability in AI-driven shopping.
According to Walmart, these profiles assist users in regulating the level of control delegated to an assistant. Consumers can mandate authorization for every single transaction or permit the AI to purchase autonomously up to a preselected financial threshold, citing USD 50, USD 100, and USD 200 as sample limits.
Future Roadmap
This initiative differentiates Walmart from Amazon, which has blocked external AI agents from functioning on its platform. Rather than taking that approach, Walmart has opted to establish an open yet regulated route for third-party assistants.
Industry analysts consider the strategy an effort to secure business from shoppers who increasingly anticipate that AI will manage recurring chores, such as restocking household necessities, purchasing favored brands, and organizing for trips or special occasions.
Walmart has previously dedicated substantial resources to AI-led retail experiences. Its generative AI shopping tool, Sparky, assists shoppers with product discovery, list creation, and item comparison directly inside the Walmart app. Furthermore, the company partnered with OpenAI to facilitate purchases via ChatGPT utilizing Instant Checkout. Walmart’s latest deployment indicates that AI-assisted shopping is transitioning from trial phases into functional implementation.
