The twiggs county board of education was recently involved in a heated debate regarding the district’s lack of transparency regarding the superintendent’s salary. A public meeting was held and a number of concerns were raised. The board responded that the superintendent did not receive any salary nor did the district receive any additional monies for his services.
While there’s no evidence to support this claim, it’s good to know that a public board is taking steps to ensure transparency in the hiring process. It’s also good that they’re taking steps to ensure the salary of the superintendent is fairly spread across the district.
The board of education is the largest district within the county and thus is responsible for the quality of education within the county. There aren’t a lot of other ways to increase the quality of a school district, but if there were, the superintendent’s salary would likely be one of them. However, all school superintendents are paid the same amount, regardless of how much they make.
That’s why I say, it’s more important to ensure that the superintendent has a nice salary than to ensure that the superintendent is the best school superintendent.
The problem is that too many superintendents make the wrong decisions with the right paychecks. This is because they are the wrong people to be making these decisions. Its not that they are stupid, its that they are being stupid. Most superintendents are good at what they do except when it comes to selecting the right superintendent. This is because they don’t have a clue.
Many school districts will have an annual budget of, let’s say $100 million. Most superintendents will be spending about $100,000 a year. This is because they are just making up the numbers in their head. They are not the ones who should be making the decisions.
This is why school boards are so bad at making decisions, because they are not the ones making the decisions. I work in a district in central Texas that has a superintendent that is paid $1.5 million a year. She is the one who spends most of her time dealing with the budget. She has no clue where the money is going or what the superintendent is supposed to do to save money.
If you want to see what they should be doing, look at their “waste budget”. I personally don’t mind when our principal has a couple of extra days off in the summer because she is trying to get rid of things that are not actually going to be in the classroom. I think that the principal in general should work more evenings and weekends. Sometimes the principal doesn’t know what to do with the extra days off and just gives it up to people.
I think we should all work longer hours. It makes a big difference in how the kids feel and how they do. If we work late night and early morning, our teachers are more likely to learn from the mistakes and not make them. If we work later in the evening at night, we have a longer school day and we dont have as much to do in the morning.
The only thing that I can think of is that the students need more work ethic and also to have more sleep at night so they dont get cranky and tired while they are working. Plus we should also teach them the importance of working on a team and have a better sense of how to help each other out.
