What’s in a name? This is one of those questions that I like to ask myself a lot. I like to think that I am a better person for having grown up hearing the phrase “too” instead of “also”. This article is written by someone who is a better person for growing up hearing “also”.
Yeah, I know. I’m not too. I don’t like that too means “not at all” at all. I’ve always been the type of person that wants to be as good as I can be, but I know that isn’t always possible. So I like to think that I am better than I was at some point in my life, even if I don’t always think so.
While too means “never” and also is a very common abbreviation, it can also be understood as “always.” So if you’re one of the people who has always hated to be too, then you probably should consider a lifestyle change.
I could say I hate too many things, but that’s a bit more complicated. I hate to eat all the time, I hate to sleep all the time, I hate to talk all the time, I hate to read all the time, I hate to do all the things I do. I hate it all. But I do like to eat, sleep, and read.
I don’t need to tell you to reduce your media consumption. Many of the things I dislike the most are actually part of a healthy lifestyle. For example, I rarely read books, movies, or TV. I only watch TV about once every few months, and I don’t get my news from the newspapers anyway. I don’t really get my news from the internet, either. I don’t watch TV at all, and I have no access to cable or satellite TV.
I think too much media can be unhealthy. I don’t think I’m the only one who feels that way, but I think too much media is over-reliance on the same thing. If one thing is repetitive, then when it’s repeated, people are more likely to get bored or distracted and the repetition is over. I think this is why I tend to get bored with just about anything, music, food, and writing. At least now I can get something for free.
The problem with television is that it’s like a game. You have the same amount of options available, and at the same time there are always the same number of options available. You cannot have more than one thing that is the same and be different. With TV, you only get a small range of options. You can’t have two shows, say, “House” and “Two and a Half Men”.
Exactly. Same with movies. You can only have one movie, or no movies, or just a handful of movies, all in one movie.
The problem is that the same could be true of music. When you like a song, you can go through the different options and pick your favourite. But the problem is the same. There is always gonna be one that you like. You cannot have more than one song that is the same and be different. In the same way, you can’t have two shows and be the same.
The same would apply to movies: you could only have one movie, or no movies, or just a handful of movies, all in one movie. But the same could be true of music: you could only have one show, or no shows, or just a handful of shows, all in one song.
