U.S. stock futures showed mixed movement on Wednesday as semiconductor stocks climbed following record financial results from SK Hynix, while market participants awaited an impending Federal Reserve interest-rate announcement alongside reports from major technology corporations.
Pre-market figures recorded at 6:57 a.m. ET revealed a 0.45% increase for Nasdaq-100 futures and a 0.24% gain for S&P 500 futures. Meanwhile, Dow Jones Industrial Average futures dropped 121 points, marking a 0.23% decline.
This varied trading activity followed Tuesday’s gains, during which the Nasdaq Composite advanced 1.18% and the S&P 500 picked up 0.6%. The Dow closed up 0.03%, constrained by losses in Boeing.
SK Hynix Earnings Lift Nasdaq Futures and Semiconductor Shares
South Korean memory-chip manufacturer SK Hynix announced third-quarter revenue of 104.6 trillion won alongside an operating profit of 83.3 trillion won, attributing the strong performance to mounting demand for artificial intelligence memory solutions.
The operating profit multiplied more than sevenfold compared to the same period last year, and revenue grew 32% from the previous quarter. Furthermore, SK Hynix locked in long-term contracts spanning over half of its anticipated production capacity for both 2027 and 2028.
These figures boosted semiconductor equities prior to the opening bell in the United States. U.S.-listed shares of SK Hynix jumped roughly 8.5%, Micron Technology rose 4.2%, Advanced Micro Devices added 1.8%, Nvidia ticked up 0.8%, and Marvell Technology climbed 2.3%. Back in South Korea, the company’s figures additionally propelled the Kospi index up by more than 6%.
US Stock Market Awaits Federal Reserve Interest Rate Decision
The Federal Reserve is set to release its policy determination at 2 p.m. ET at the conclusion of a two-day meeting. Wall Street anticipates that central bank officials will maintain the benchmark interest-rate target range at 3.75%–4.00%, following a quarter-point rate hike in September.
Investors will also scrutinize commentary from Chair Kevin Warsh for clues regarding future monetary policy meetings. Projections from the CME FedWatch tool indicated roughly a 90% chance of no rate adjustment ahead of the announcement.
Inflation continues to play a central role in these evaluations. Elevated energy costs have amplified fears that persistent price pressures might leave policymakers with limited flexibility to reduce borrowing expenses.
Upcoming U.S. economic metrics due on Thursday—including third-quarter gross domestic product figures and the September personal consumption expenditures index—will offer further insight into economic growth and inflation trends. Because traders have priced in additional rate hikes extending into 2027, the Fed’s forward guidance remains critical beyond Wednesday’s immediate decision.
Microsoft, Alphabet Earnings Shift Focus Toward AI Spending Plans
Both Microsoft and Alphabet are slated to publish their quarterly figures after Wednesday’s market close. Their cloud computing divisions and data center expenditures will face close scrutiny as investors evaluate whether higher investment in artificial intelligence translates into meaningful revenue growth. Microsoft confirmed that its financial report encompasses the first quarter of its 2027 fiscal year.
Alphabet shares advanced about 1.5% in pre-market trading, whereas Microsoft stock drifted lower. Technology equities have mounted a recovery this week after weathering a sluggish first half of October, pushing the Nasdaq up roughly 2% for the week.
Nevertheless, debt-funded spending remains a source of apprehension for investors while interest rates remain high. Morgan Stanley strategist Mike Wilson remarked on Tuesday that “most of the correction is already over,” addressing the recent downturn in tech stocks.
Robinhood Falls as Vertiv Gains Following Quarterly Earnings
Elsewhere, shares of Robinhood Markets dropped about 7.2% ahead of the opening bell after its third-quarter financial results missed analyst estimates. The brokerage reported cryptocurrency transaction revenue of $120 million, representing a 55% decline year-over-year.
Diluted earnings per share dropped to $0.51, while total revenue reached $1.42 billion. Prior to the opening bell, consensus analyst projections had anticipated earnings of $0.55 per share.
Conversely, data-center infrastructure provider Vertiv surged 15.3% after beating quarterly expectations and upgrading its full-year guidance. Visa dipped approximately 1.8% following its own earnings release. These contrasting trajectories highlighted how market participants reacted to individual corporate updates even as the wider market stood by for the Fed’s verdict.
Treasury Yields Rise While Global Stock Markets Trade Unevenly
U.S. Treasury yields drifted upward in advance of the Fed’s announcement, with the benchmark 10-year yield hovering near 5.01% and the two-year yield resting close to 4.75%. In the energy sector, U.S. crude futures hovered near $101.30 a barrel, while Brent traded around $114.85 amid renewed geopolitical friction in the Middle East.
Asian equity markets finished predominantly higher, led by South Korea’s Kospi gaining 6.63% and Japan’s Nikkei 225 rising 1.08%. European exchanges saw mixed results, with the Stoxx 600 slipping slightly.
