Google Play Newsstand debuted on November 20, 2013, following Google’s decision to combine Google Play Magazines and Google Currents into a single application.
Newsstand functioned as more than a standard news reader. Through the service, users were able to purchase individual magazine issues as well as subscribe directly to various publications.
The platform combined publisher content alongside topic-driven feeds and tailored recommendations, assisting users in discovering articles that matched their personal interests.

Additionally, Google Play Newsstand accommodated digital magazine formats, featuring print-style layouts that users could download for offline reading without requiring an internet connection.

The application extended beyond Android devices. Google also provided a dedicated iOS app that enabled iPhone and iPad users to view its news and magazine offerings.

Content creators utilized specialized Newsstand Producer tools. These utilities assisted publishers in overseeing layouts, advertising parameters, geographic availability, and readership analytics.

In May 2018, Google unveiled the platform’s next phase, integrating Newsstand into the revamped Google News application, which brought in capabilities such as “For You” and “Full Coverage.”

The discontinuation occurred progressively. While the Newsstand app transitioned into Google News in May 2018, the Newsstand section within Google Play persisted until November 2018.

Ultimately, Google discontinued paid print-replica magazine subscriptions and single-issue sales in January 2020. As the service reached its final conclusion, active subscribers received offers for refunds.
