TikTok is branching out past short-form clips by launching a restaurant discovery tool that positions the platform to challenge Google Maps and Yelp. Dubbed Must Eat, this fresh in-app hub consolidates dining suggestions, customer feedback, maps, and reservation tools into a single destination.
Drawing from upwards of 40 million food-focused videos, reviews, and comments on TikTok, the tool is designed to connect users with trending neighborhood eateries by leveraging the very content that previously turned those spots into viral sensations.
Must Eat Turns Viral Food Videos Into Recommendations
Must Eat aggregates restaurant suggestions from across TikTok and structures them into searchable guides. Users have access to two distinct sections: “Everyday Eats” for casual everyday dining and neighborhood hotspots, alongside “Elevated Dining” for fine dining and milestone celebrations.
The interface lets visitors sort dining options by type of food, user rating, proximity, and operational status. Individual restaurant profiles also connect directly to relevant TikTok videos, enabling patrons to preview dishes and the venue’s vibe prior to booking a table.
Visitors have the ability to bookmark locations for future visits, submit personal reviews, contact establishments directly, and secure bookings for participating venues. Participating restaurants handle reservations through OpenTable.

TikTok Takes on Yelp and Google Maps
Rather than functioning as a standard business directory, TikTok’s approach utilizes viral suggestions and culinary content creators. Because a single viral clip can expose a dining establishment to millions, Must Eat seeks to convert that digital interest into tangible foot traffic.
Adam Presser, TikTok US CEO, characterized the feature as a compilation of dialogues featuring creators, local restaurateurs, and everyday consumers.
The platform noted that businesses are prohibited from paying for placement on Must Eat’s curated lists. This policy may help differentiate the directory from sponsored advertisements, even though the suggestions originate from organic content posted throughout the platform.

Launch Limited to Three US Regions
At launch, Must Eat is restricted to the San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles, and New York City. The company has not yet revealed a schedule for expansion to other markets. This rollout follows the debut of TikTok Go, a previous tool allowing users to find and book local attractions and hotels directly through in-app media.
Data provided by TikTok indicates that 27 million Americans checked out a new restaurant, café, or retailer last year after first seeing it on the platform. Through the introduction of Must Eat, TikTok aims to bridge the divide between viewing a culinary video and actually patronizing the establishment.
