Apple is getting ready to expand its presence in the smart-home sector, with a new home hub rumored for release on October 13. Known internally by the code name J490, this upcoming hardware is slated to serve as the core of the company’s refreshed connected-home initiatives.
This rollout represents an entirely new product line for Apple as it broadens its ecosystem past the iPhone, Apple Watch, and current HomePod and Apple TV offerings. The anticipated release was detailed by Bloomberg News, citing insiders with knowledge of the plans. Apple has yet to issue a public statement regarding the report.
New Home Hub to Compete with Amazon and Google
As outlined in the Bloomberg coverage, Apple’s upcoming hub will sport a display measuring roughly 6 inches square. It is said to come in setups built specifically for either countertop placement or wall installation.
The unit aims to merge smart-home management with customized data and services. Sources indicate it will identify separate household residents and deliver information and replies tailored to their specific accounts and personal details.
Such functionality places Apple’s appliance into direct competition with existing offerings like Amazon’s Echo and Google’s Google Home, though the depth of Apple’s ecosystem integration is expected to be a major differentiator.
Additionally, the tech giant is reportedly crafting software tailored for the device that leverages its enhanced Siri functionality.
HomePod Mini and Apple TV Also Get Updates
This push into smart homes will apparently reach past the standalone hub. Apple is projected to release a refreshed HomePod mini, which would be the first overhaul for the small speaker since its release in 2020.
Plans are also in motion for a new Apple TV set-top box, marking the first Apple TV hardware refresh since 2022. Both devices are anticipated to keep their current external looks while gaining faster internal chips. These performance bumps are designed to accommodate advanced Siri AI tools as Apple pushes its artificial-intelligence capabilities further across its hardware lineup.

A Bigger Bet on AI and the Connected Home
The rumored October debut arrives shortly following John Ternus assuming the role of Apple’s chief executive, succeeding his extended run as the firm’s head of hardware. Market analysts anticipate his management will maintain a strong focus on Apple’s hardware expertise and the incorporation of artificial intelligence throughout its product lineup.
Apple has previously initiated a comprehensive revamp of Siri, and these upcoming smart-home devices could position the assistant more centrally in daily domestic routines. Because the company currently maintains a fairly modest smart-home device portfolio relative to its competitors, this new hub, alongside the refreshed HomePod mini and Apple TV, could signal Apple’s growing footprint in the market while binding the devices tightly to its broader ecosystem.
