It’s important to recognize and acknowledge that the way we live and the things we do, for better or for worse, affect mental health.
Although most of the things we do can be attributed to a multitude of causes, the more we can acknowledge and understand the impact of these things, the better our mental health will be. When we take care of ourselves, we can address the underlying causes of mental health issues, which means we can work more effectively toward recovery. For example, we can address eating disorders by working on our diet. We can look at our alcohol intake as a way to prevent or reduce alcohol abuse.
In the same way, when we take care of ourselves we can also take care of our mental health, so we can work toward recovery. How do we do this? We can identify the underlying causes of mental health issues and work on the root cause of that. For instance, eating disorders are often caused by eating habits, which can be changed. Alcohol abuse is often caused by physical and/or sexual abuse. By addressing the underlying cause of the mental health issue, we can work toward recovery.
