On Monday, October 19, Indian equities slipped as weak earnings from private-sector banks and high crude oil prices dampened investor sentiment. By 10:05 a.m. IST, the Nifty 50 had dipped 0.38% to 23,057.6, and the Sensex declined 0.39% to 74,434.53, while market participants evaluated September-quarter financial reports against Brent crude holding near USD 108 a barrel.
Private lenders spearheaded the morning sell-off after both HDFC Bank and Axis Bank posted profits below forecasts. Consequently, the Nifty Private Bank index slid 1.7% amid growing worries regarding shrinking margins and increasing operational expenses. Conversely, public sector banks advanced following more robust financial disclosures from select state-backed institutions.
HDFC Bank shares retreated 2% as reduced treasury income and elevated provisions for bad loans impacted quarterly figures, with a narrowing net interest margin further straining the stock despite lending growth. Axis Bank tumbled 4.1% because of higher operating costs and softer non-interest income.
In contrast, state-run lenders rallied, driving their sectoral index up 2.2% in early transactions. Punjab National Bank advanced 5.4% on the back of an improved net interest margin. Anita Gandhi, head of institutional business at Arihant Capital Markets, noted that market participants seemed to lean toward public sector banks in light of their recent earnings updates.
Crude oil continued to trouble investors as Brent hovered around USD 108 per barrel. Elevated energy costs threaten to expand India’s import tab, stoke inflationary pressures, and weaken the rupee. Pankaj Pandey, head of retail research at ICICI Securities, remarked, “Crude continues to remain a bigger challenge for the market,” noting that lasting market advances depend on a retreat in oil prices.
The broader market displayed a mixed picture, with ten out of sixteen major sectors posting gains. Even so, small-cap stocks dropped 0.5% and mid-caps lost 0.2%. Shares of Urban Company decreased 7.4% after the digital home-services platform announced an expansion in its quarterly losses.
Market participants additionally monitored the forthcoming Jio Platforms initial public offering, a move capable of shifting near-term liquidity. Ongoing geopolitical friction in the Middle East and persistently high oil prices are expected to keep steering trading behavior.
