Apple is reportedly working on what could be the MacBook Pro lineup’s most substantial redesign in years. The forthcoming laptops are anticipated to feature an OLED display alongside touchscreen capabilities, all housed within a slimmer and noticeably lighter body.
According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple has re-engineered the notebook’s internal layout to achieve this weight reduction. By shrinking and repositioning various internal components, the company aims to make the updated MacBook Pro much more portable, as Gurman notes.
MacBook Pro Could Get a Major Weight Reduction
This potential weight loss could resolve a primary criticism aimed at Apple’s larger pro-tier laptops. Currently, the 16-inch MacBook Pro reaches up to roughly 4.8 pounds (about 2.18 kg), whereas the 15-inch MacBook Air sits near 3.3 pounds (around 1.5 kg).
While Gurman omitted specific weight figures for the newly designed MacBook Pro, characterizing the device as “significantly lighter” implies that Apple aims for a substantial drop rather than a minor tweak.
A lighter build, however, is merely one component of the anticipated overhaul. The next-generation MacBook Pro is likewise projected to introduce both an OLED screen and touch functionality to the Mac line for the first time.
OLED and Touchscreen Expected
The OLED panel is expected to provide enhanced contrast and richer blacks than current display panels. Meanwhile, adding touch support represents a fundamental departure from Apple’s traditional philosophy regarding Mac interfaces.
Additional visual adjustments may accompany the redesign. Past reports indicate Apple might swap out the current display notch for a hole-punch camera design, alongside implementing a Dynamic Island-like interface.
The updated 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro variants could debut as soon as October, though a November timeframe remains a possibility. Gurman has indicated that these units are presently undergoing testing using macOS 27.2.
