Finnish law enforcement has initiated a criminal inquiry into potential environmental infractions at a proposed Google data center location in northern Finland. Officials are reviewing whether Google’s local subsidiary carried out preparatory work impacting the environment prior to the finalization of legally mandated evaluations.
The inquiry focuses on a property close to Muhos, where forest clearing and drainage operations allegedly occurred ahead of finished environmental impact assessments. This development increases regulatory scrutiny on Google’s substantial artificial intelligence infrastructure investment in the country.
Police Examine Drainage and Water Management
According to police, initial details indicate potential deficiencies related to drainage and water management at the building site managed by Tuike Finland, an enterprise under Alphabet, Google’s parent organization.
Detectives will review the details of the operations to establish if environmental regulations were violated. The inquiry is currently active, and investigators have not yet reached final determinations regarding criminal accountability.
The Finnish Supervisory Agency, tasked with monitoring environmental permits and reviews, directed Google on October 6 to halt any preliminary tasks capable of modifying the environment at the Muhos property as well as another planned data center location.
National broadcaster Yle indicated that officials also expressed worries regarding unfinished environmental reviews and whether the organization’s water management strategies properly accounted for potential hazards.

Google Says Work Followed Its Understanding of Rules
Google previously stated that its initial site preparation proceeded in line with its interpretation of necessary authorizations under local Finnish regulations. The corporation did not immediately reply to fresh inquiries for comment from Reuters.
This inquiry comes after questions were raised regarding operations at the location, which involved clearing timber and altering drainage networks. Law enforcement is assessing whether these actions adhered to national environmental mandates. The preliminary examination is anticipated to be lengthy, with Finnish police suggesting the initial phase could stretch into 2027.

Google’s USD 15 Billion AI Investment Faces Scrutiny
This initiative is a component of Google’s intended USD 15 billion outlay toward AI systems in Finland, which the firm has characterized as its biggest financial commitment on the European continent. The spending encompasses server facilities, power grid enhancements, and green energy and battery initiatives. These centers are designed to power Google platforms such as Gemini, Search, Maps, and YouTube.
Finland has drawn significant technology infrastructure projects due to its low-temperature weather, low-emission power sources, and official backing for tech development. Nonetheless, this situation underscores the environmental hurdles tied to the expansion of server facilities. Although these sites fuel rising needs for artificial intelligence processing, their development can disrupt local woodlands, drainage networks, and water control systems.
