In the case of protein powder, it is often cheaper to buy it in bulk at the grocery store with the rest of a product, so it is easy to get a protein powder that does not contain grains and vegetables, so you can add these ingredients to it for a lower cost. The problem is often when you mix it with other ingredients, the result is a mess. I’m not a fan of trying to mix proteins together to make a protein shake either.
As it turns out, there are some proteins that are not always a part of a protein shake, and those are the ones that go well with milk. This is why protein shakes with milk are usually a healthy snack at a snack bar.

As far as I know, there is no single standard for protein shakes. Just like there is no single standard for milk. So there are many different types of protein shakes and it’s all up to you which you prefer.
A protein shake that is high in protein and low in carbs will give you a quick boost throughout the day. A shake that is high in carbs and low in protein will give you a slow steady boost throughout the day. A shake that is balanced in protein and carbs will give you a steady boost throughout the day. A shake that has too much protein or carbs will give you a quick boost throughout the day.
