Filecoin is approaching the conclusion of a six-year token vesting period that has distributed FIL to Protocol Labs and the Filecoin Foundation since 2020. These scheduled token distributions are set to conclude in mid-October 2026. Current mining metrics suggest that yearly supply additions originating from both block rewards and vesting could experience a decrease of roughly 75%.
Filecoin’s Six-Year Vesting Schedule Ends in October
The Filecoin mainnet officially went live on October 15, 2020. Under the initial tokenomics, Protocol Labs—incorporating team members and contributors—was allocated 300 million FIL, while the Filecoin Foundation received 100 million FIL. Both pools were distributed via a six-year timeline, ensuring tokens entered circulation incrementally instead of all at once.
Combined, these two allocations account for approximately 66.7 million FIL in annual distributions. An additional 9.8 million FIL falls under this same six-year category according to Filecoin’s Lotus accounting code, bringing the yearly total concluding this month to about 68.3 million FIL. Official guidance in Filecoin’s 2026 strategy indicated that the final network vesting cycles would wrap up this year, with code-based calculations pinpointing the completion date as October 14, alongside reports pointing to October 15.
Annual FIL Additions Could Decline by 77%
According to data from Filfox cited by The Defiant, Filecoin generated approximately 56,449 FIL within a 24-hour window. Maintaining that pace would result in roughly 20.6 million FIL minted annually through block rewards, though actual production fluctuates based on ongoing network conditions.
Incorporating the expiring vesting distributions places total annualized issuance at approximately 88.9 million FIL. Dropping those distributions brings the figure down to 20.6 million FIL, marking a reduction of about 77%. Given that Filecoin’s reported circulating supply sits at 919.9 million FIL, the annualized issuance rate would drop from roughly 9.7% down to 2.2%. These metrics track gross token generation rather than net shifts in supply or actual market trading volume.
Storage Providers Will Continue Earning FIL
Filecoin relies on block rewards to compensate the storage providers powering its decentralized data storage network. The reward mechanism merges a time-based issuance structure with an extra component linked directly to network storage capacity and performance. The expiration of the original allocation timeline does not halt these incentive payments or alter their existing vesting framework.
Per these protocols, storage providers gain immediate access to 25% of their earned block rewards. The remaining 75% unlocks progressively over a period of 180 days. Furthermore, Filecoin continuously removes tokens from circulation via network fees and mandates that providers lock up FIL as collateral. Because these underlying mechanisms influence circulating token counts, a drop in scheduled releases does not directly translate to a one-to-one reduction in circulating supply.
FIL Price Declines Ahead of Vesting Deadline
Filecoin recently changed hands near USD 1.10, marking a 2.29% drop over a 24-hour period. Trading volume fell by 46.83%, and FIL traded underneath its daily pivot threshold of USD 1.13. Even with the short-term dip, the digital asset posted a 39.68% gain over the preceding 30 days.
On the charts, FIL faces immediate resistance at USD 1.13, with a subsequent hurdle at USD 1.22. Conversely, USD 0.997 acts as a primary support level, backed by USD 0.87 as a secondary potential floor. While the forthcoming vesting milestone will curtail scheduled token emissions, this shift neither forces holders to liquidate previously unlocked holdings nor dictates the future price trajectory of the cryptocurrency.
