A stiff as a board is like a wall for an amputee. The problem is that the two ends of the stiff as a board are almost a perfect fit. When the amputee is in trouble, they are almost able to squeeze through the stiff as a board. When they are in a straight line they cannot. When they attempt to, they are almost in a perfect straight line, but not quite.
This is what we call “stiff as a board.” One of the best ways to avoid stiff as a board is to sand the end of a piece of furniture until it is absolutely straight. The result is a piece of furniture that will be just fine for the rest of us.
This reminds me of a joke I heard by some kids at a campfire a few years ago. Imagine there are two children sitting at the end of a rope. One kid is a boy and the other is a girl. The boy is about to jump off the end of the rope, but the girl is not interested. The boy thinks, “she’s too short to support me.” So he asks the other child if she wants to go get a drink of water. The girl says no.

One of the ways you can tell whether something is a good fit for your space is by its weight. If it has a lot of weight, then it’ll probably be hard to move. If it doesn’t have a lot of weight, then you can usually move it with a little effort. But if it has a lot of weight, then you need to think about what you actually want to do with it.
Like most of our ideas, this one was based on my own experience. I moved into my first apartment with no idea of a room for me. It was filled with books, and I just used it for storage and general living things. As time went on I added a few more rooms to the apartment, and it felt like I was filling the space with things I didnt really need.
When you move in with a room for yourself, you really only have two options. You can either spend a lot of time and effort putting the room in order, or you can just leave it a mess. The second option is the true “dreadful” option. If you just leave a room empty and unorganized, it’s going to come across as un-fun, and it’s going to be harder to work with.
So, you know, if you really really wanted to fill that room with things you didnt really need, you could try putting it in an office, in a storage room, on the ground floor, or even in a closet. In most cases though, it’s going to come across as a mess, and not a lot of fun, so it’s a bad option.
