I have to admit this was one of the first things I heard when I moved to NYC and I didn’t know if I should go to Marcela Bakery or not. I had never heard of them, but I had always heard good things about them and I wanted to give it a try.
I was very wrong. Marcela Bakery is a Brooklyn-based company known for their gourmet cupcakes. The owners, Marcela and her sister are part of a family business founded in 1982 that has branched out into other product lines such as gourmet pastries and baked goods. Their Cupcake Gallery is one of New York’s most popular bakery chains, with locations in Manhattan and Brooklyn.
What I really like about them is the fact that they are also a retailer selling cupcake flavors. So, for example, I could get a dozen delicious cupcakes and an assortment of flavor options for my birthday (or a company-wide promotion) and have them shipped to me in a small box.
A bakery is a very small place, often a tiny kitchen. And so, when I think of cupcake shops, I think of small places that sell cupcake flavors. My favorite cupcake shop is marcela bakery. It’s part of a chain of shops that includes a bakery in each location. They also sell more of their own products, including cupcakes, cakes, and pastries.
You can’t just walk into a cupcake shop and expect a cupcake. There’s an idea that you just need to order a dozen cupcakes and have them delivered to your door. That’s not how a cupcake shop works. You need to bring the cupcake to a place that sells cupcakes, probably via the drive-thru window.
A cupcake shop, by contrast, is a place that sells and sells cupcakes. A bakery is a place that sells baked goods. A cupcake shop is a place that sells cupcakes and/or baked goods. A bakery is a place that sells baked goods and/or cupcakes. A cupcake shop is a place that sells cupcakes and/or baked goods and/or pastries and/or chocolates and/or nuts and/or cheesecakes.
If you see a bakery and you think you might want a cupcake, you can still ask for one, even if this is a bakery. Just be mindful of the fact that if you ask for a cupcake, you are likely to be told that the bakery is full. So you have to wait.

A bakery is a place where you can find baked goods. In fact, the word ‘bakery’ itself is a baked good. It dates to the Middle Ages, when bakers were known for their baked goods. The word ‘bakery’ itself is not a specific type of baked good, but just a noun that is used to refer to a place where people make baked goods.
Well, I don’t know about you, but when a bakery is full, I’m not going to wait. I’m going to grab a cupcake on the way. Unless, of course, I’m in a hurry and not in the mood to wait, in which case I’m going to wait my turn.
